Lead the Engineering of Critical Power Infrastructure Across Sweden
A major player in power systems and energy infrastructure is seeking an experienced and technically astute Principal Engineer to lead the engineering scope of complex substation projects ranging from 10 kV to 400 kV. In this high-responsibility role, you will manage multi-disciplinary engineering teams, coordinate with clients and suppliers, and ensure successful delivery of high-voltage projects critical to Sweden’s power grid.
If you have a proven background in substation engineering, including Svenska kraftnät projects, and are ready to lead at a principal level, this is a unique opportunity to apply your expertise to nationally significant infrastructure initiatives.
About the Role
As Project Manager Engineering (Lead Engineer), you will be responsible for the engineering execution of substation projects across their full lifecycle. This includes managing all technical interfaces, planning and coordinating engineering resources, and ensuring compliance with all relevant safety, quality, and contractual standards.
You will lead internal teams and external partners, ensuring smooth communication and alignment throughout. The role demands an in-depth understanding of Medium and High Voltage systems, Gas Insulated Substations (GIS), and Swedish power grid requirements.
The position is full-time, on-site in Västerås, and requires Swedish citizenship due to security clearance requirements.
Main Responsibilities
- Lead the engineering delivery of substation projects ranging from 10 kV to 400 kV
- Coordinate with customers, sub-suppliers, and project stakeholders to ensure engineering objectives are met
- Ensure all engineering deliverables comply with contractual, safety, quality, and financial expectations
- Plan and manage engineering teams according to internal governance procedures
- Oversee internal and external communication and documentation throughout the project lifecycle
- Identify and mitigate project risks while seeking and developing improvement opportunities
- Drive technical leadership within the project and act as the key interface for engineering performance
What We Are Looking For
Required qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering
- At least 10 years of professional experience in substation engineering or similar projects
- Demonstrated expertise in Medium and High Voltage substation design (10–400 kV)
- Prior experience in Svenska kraftnät 400 kV substation projects
- Deep familiarity with GIS (Gas Insulated Substation) systems and tender processes
- Experience in managing engineering coordination across EPC or OEM structures
- Ability to operate fluently in Swedish and English, both written and spoken
- Swedish citizenship, required due to project security clearance
- Willingness to be present full-time on-site in Västerås
Preferred qualifications:
- Background in site-based engineering roles or substation construction oversight
- Strong understanding of project governance frameworks and risk management
What You Can Expect
- A senior leadership role at the heart of Sweden’s national energy infrastructure projects
- Hands-on involvement in high-voltage engineering challenges of national importance
- Structured project environments with support from experienced engineering and delivery teams
- On-site work in Västerås, contributing to project excellence and system reliability
- A one-year assignment with the possibility of extension depending on project continuity and performance
